In Memory of Jim Taylor - Hearts for Jim

Jim Taylor is a founding member of the University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA). It was his vision, leadership and legal expertise that led to the creation of the UNA to provide services to the residential population on UBC Campus. Jim was the first chair of the UNA Board from 2002 to 2007.

A tough and brilliant lawyer was him, however, what community members remember most about him is his kindness, generosity, and love for the community. In the last 15 years of his life, Jim was a tireless volunteer leading many community programs that serve the needs of families, newcomers and the diverse groups living on campus. It was his goal to make the UNA community inclusive, caring and functional to all residents.

In 2009, UBC honoured Jim by dedicating a park in Hawthorn Place in his name, and in 2012 he was awarded a Commemorative Medal during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee for his work in the university neighbourhoods.

Jim passed away on Oct 16, 2016. He touched many lives and left this world a better place. Without him, we would have not been able to live in such a community that is not only physically beautiful but also embraces the spirit of volunteerism, neighbours helping neighbours and giving back to the community.

In honour of Jim’s contribution to the campus community, the UNA has started the Hearts for Jim fundraiser to support the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation at St. Paul’s where Jim received his heart transplant and care. Your donation will support St. Paul’s to provide advanced care for people with most complex cases of heart and lung disease.
