St. Paul's Foundation - In Memory Pages

In Memory of Phil Needham

Throughout Phil's life music was important. In the 60's in Winnipeg, he hosted a CBC radio show called "All That Jazz", and in later life attended the Vancouver International Jazz Fest, enjoying local artists and touring legends. At home, if he wasn't watching the news, he had Miles Davis playing or jazz station KPLU. Phil was happy to share his knowledge of jazz, hard bop especially.

Like many aesthetes he could occasionally be scathing in his judgment - but that was because he cared so much, and that was part of the ongoing conversation about music. He was enthusiastic about new artists as well, and loved Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga's collaborations with Tony Bennett. His sister Margaret's love of classical music also influenced him, and Beethoven was a lifelong favourite.

When Phil was receiving care at St. Paul's, and was away from the familiarity of home, he was envigorated by the talented and sensitive musicians that do the work of music therapy. Family visits were enhanced by the presence of music, whether performed live by St. Paul’s music therapists or through the players and CDs made available by the program. In his final days, music was still a pleasure, and the music therapy program made Phil's life better.

To honour Phil's memory and celebrate his love of music, funds raised will be given to help support the music therapy program at St Paul's Hospital.

Any donation makes a positive difference! We thank you so much.

Sincerely,

The Needham, MacFarlane and Watts Family
